ASTRONOMY WORKSHOP
This introductory workshop, conducted by Dr. David G. Iadevaia, is for anyone interested in the use of a small telescope and includes constellation identification.
TELESCOPE FUNDAMENTALS
You will learn how to setup and point an 8 inch Schmidt-Cassegrain type telescope. At the end of the session you will be able to locate celestial objects. You will learn about magnification power, how to guide on an object and how setting circles work.
HOW TO LOCATE CONSTELLATIONS
Also included in this workshop will be an introduction in how to identify constellations. You will learn how to correctly use a star chart.
COOKOUT INCLUDED
We will have hot dogs and hamburgers cooked under the stars with salad and dessert and of course popcorn throughout the night. Soft drinks are included.
Alcoholic beverages and smoking prohibited.
LOCATION
The workshop will be held under the clear dark skies of Patagonia Station located at 4000 feet above sea level in Southeastern Arizona. The observatory is a primitive site (no running water or toilets) however in an emergency there is a portable toilet on site for use. There is a phone and electricity. If you bring a sleeping bag you can sleep under the stars. We recommend that you make reservations with a Bed and Breakfast or the Hotel in Patagonia just 7 miles north of the observatory.
You might plan a weekend for your workshop where you could stay several nights and visit the world famous Nature Conservancy's Patagonia Sonoita Creek Preserve. A trip to Nogales, Sonora Mexico is only 15 miles away if you prefer to shop instead. The town of Tombstone is "just down the road" as are a number of wineries in Sonoita and Nogales. Horseback riding and hiking abound.
